GARDEN MANAGER
& GROWER
The Garden Manger is responsible for managing the entire cultivated growing area of around 1.5 acres, and the surrounding garden of an additional 1.5 acres. They will have excellent crop planning, time management, and organisation skills. Experience in growing or handling flowers is preferred, but a love of flowers, the outdoors, great stamina and a willingness to learn the way of the flower is essential.
Essential skills
Minimum of 3 years professional employment in horticulture/ crop production
Experience in small scale farming, or large gardens
Excellent physical health
Motivated, organised and self-driven, working as an individual
Clean driving license
Crop planning experience
Confident in excel spreadsheets, Google workspace, navigating online systems
Knowledge and experience of petrol run garden machinery
Knowledge and experience in organic growing practises and soil health care
desirable skills
Excellent time management and planning skills
Experience and prior knowledge of flowers and flower growing
Great communication skills and a friendly, positive disposition with a can-do attitude
Confidence driving medium sized vans
Budgeting experience
Garden design experience, with an interest in permaculture and rewilding
Management of a large growing plot
The Garden Manager’s role
The garden is the beating heart of PYRUS and requires a dedicated individual to keep it healthy. The role is varied and demanding, covers all aspects of crop production, garden care, with harvesting and sales. This is a permanent position with a four month probation period; we welcome an individual looking for long term employment. Hours will increased through summer and decreased though winter, allowing for extended time off in Jan/Feb.
Garden:
Monthly task planning and crop production
Garden maintenance, inc weeding, clearing beds, feeding, planting out, pruning, netting, deadheading, dividing, grass cutting, strimming, mulching etc
All aspects of plant and soil care inc fertility management and records, composting, responding to pests and health issues
Irrigation installation, management and maintenance
Garden development, design, and polytunnel maintenance
Crop records and crop planning
Propagation from seed and cuttings
Sales:
Working with and improving sales systems, including online hub sales
Awareness and communication of crop availability
Customer communication
Sales records and targets
Flower delivery when required
Administration:
Wholesale customer communication
Volunteer communication, management and recruitment
Crop and sales records on excel
Budgeting garden expenses
